Exhausted mother and child needing respite

Respite Services

Do you have kids with high needs? Are you in danger of parental burnout?
We can help your family with respite supports you can count on.

Parenting is already challenging; parenting a child with complex or special needs can be overwhelming and exhausting. Parental burnout comes from caring so much and pouring all your energy into supporting your child with high needs, and then feeling so exhausted that you have nothing left to give to the rest of your family.

Here’s what you need to know about burnout for parents of a child with complex needs—it is far more common than you think. In fact, it is almost impossible to parent a child with special needs without struggling with exhaustion. Furthermore, your mental health can be impacted by feelings of overwhelm and layers of guilt about not being able to do or be enough.

There is no need to feel guilty when you realize you are on the way to burnout. Instead, it is a sign that it’s time to get help with the challenges of your day-to-day life. Asking for help and putting consistent, reliable supports in place is a step in the right direction for the health and overall wellbeing of your family. It is also a really smart thing to do.

Our Kinnections Program wants to help you get and stay healthy.

We match families with qualified workers to provide dependable, ongoing, professional respite services.

Of course, respite looks different for every family. A family might need hourly respite support for their child. Hourly respite is where a skilled provider comes to your home and helps manage behaviours and daily routines with the child. Or the respite provider can take the child out into the community for a change of scenery and some fun.

The pressures of caregiving might be such that your family needs a break for more than just a couple of hours. In that case, you might be looking for overnight care. A Kinnections’ trained host home can provide you with that extra break. The schedule is flexible to suit your family. For example, it can be one weekend a month or one night a week. It allows you and your child the opportunity to recharge and be ready to reconnect.

The Kinnections Program works both with private families and families of children who have FSCD contracts (Family Support for Children with Disabilities). Better yet, Kinnections can direct bill FSCD, so families can take advantage of respite services without having to pay out of their own pocket!
