Respite for Children

We provide consistent care for your high-needs Level II child

respite for children with special needs in Edmonton

The Kinnections Disability Support program connects families in the Edmonton area with respite for their high-needs children.

Feel confident in your respite worker, knowing they have the skills and training needed to care for your child.

All parents need breaks to stay healthy and sane. Kids are a lot of work. That is even more true when you are parenting a child with high needs. With respite, you can focus on taking care of yourself and the other aspects of your life.

Breaks from caregiving pressure might be hourly supports, overnight care, or out-of-home respite:

Hourly Respite

Kinnections can provide skilled staff to come to you. We can work with you in your home to help manage behaviours and daily routines with your child. If it works better for you, we could also provide a community outing staff person to take your child out of the house and give them a chance to be a kid.

Host Home – Overnight Care

Sometimes you need a longer break than just a couple of hours. Maybe a family member doesn’t have the energy to take care of your high needs child for a whole weekend. That is where our host homes come in. A trained host family will partner with your family to provide that extra break – whether it be one weekend a month or just one night.

Host Home – Extended Placement

Sometimes, having a high needs kid remain in the family home is too much to manage. Maybe you are so exhausted that you’re ill. Perhaps there are safety concerns for your other children.

Whatever the reason, our host homes act as out-of-home placements. We provide a safe home to support your child while keeping them connected with you.

What makes a child a Level II?

Your Family Supports for Children with Disabilities (FSCD) case manager will score a child as Level I or Level II based on the information provided by the family. FSCD decides the level based on the amount of support needed, level of functioning, existing behaviours, etc.

Perhaps an easier way to look at it would be that

  • Level I children’s needs can be met in the family, and community with occasional respite and breaks.
  • Level II children present with more challenging behaviours, and it is difficult to get the support or breaks needed to stay well. These are the children or youth with higher needs who require specialized services, resources and support.

If your child has been assessed as Level I and you believe that a Level II coding is more appropriate, it can be valuable to review your child’s needs with the caseworker. When Crossroads is determining what level of supports a child or youth requires, we refer to a multidisciplinary screening tool that we have developed.
